چکیده

Introduction Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) remains a leading cause of morbidity and disability and is considered a major public health concern. Ischemia is considered a relevant factor in TBI for prognosis, but its diagnosis in the early phases is still a problem. Now jugular venous oxygen saturation (SjVO2) is used to evaluate blood flow and cerebral metabolic rate as well as the cerebral venous-arterial pCO2 difference (VADpCO2) as a marker of low cerebral blood flow. Besides, there’s no statement of VADpCO2 to guide medical therapy, consider as a not specific for global cerebral ischemia, but its observation over time may be useful.

Continuous jugular venous oximetry in the neurointensive care unit--a brief review.

PURPOSE To describe the technique of continuous jugular venous oxygen saturation (SjVO(2)) monitoring and review its applications in the neurointensive care unit (NICU), with special reference to the management of raised intracranial pressure (ICP) following severe acute brain injury. SOURCE This narrative review is based on a selection of current literature on SjVO(2) monitoring in conjuncti...

Effects of ulinastatin on cerebral oxygen metabolism and CRP levels in patients with severe traumatic brain injury

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of ulinastatin on cerebral oxygen metabolism and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI). A total of 92 patients with sTBI, admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University (Xinxiang, China), were randomly divided into control and observation groups. The control grou...

Jugular bulb oxygen saturation correlates with Full Outline of Responsiveness score in severe traumatic brain injury patients

BACKGROUND Maintaining brain oxygenation status is the main goal of treatment in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Jugular venous oxygen saturation (SjvO2) monitoring is a technique to estimate global balance between cerebral oxygen supply and its metabolic requirement. Full Outline of Responsiveness (FOUR) score, a new consciousness measurement scoring, is expected to become an alternative ...

Differential influence of arterial blood glucose on cerebral metabolism following severe traumatic brain injury

INTRODUCTION Maintaining arterial blood glucose within tight limits is beneficial in critically ill patients. Upper and lower limits of detrimental blood glucose levels must be determined. METHODS In 69 patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), cerebral metabolism was monitored by assessing changes in arterial and jugular venous blood at normocarbia (partial arterial pressure of carb...

In vitro norepinephrine significantly activates isolated platelets from healthy volunteers and critically ill patients following severe traumatic brain injury

INTRODUCTION Norepinephrine, regularly used to increase systemic arterial blood pressure and thus improve cerebral perfusion following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), may activate platelets. This, in turn, could promote microthrombosis formation and induce additional brain damage. METHODS The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of norepinephrine on platelets isolated...
